First 5 Little Library

Through the First 5 Little Library initiative, libraries provide book bags to Early Learning and Care and School Age Childcare Services to support children’s early language and literacy development.

Get a Little Library book bag!

All Early Learning and Care (ELC) and School-Age Childcare (SAC) services are invited to contact their local library to arrange to collect a First 5 Little Library book bag. You can find your local library here

What’s in the bag?

The First 5 Little Libraries book bags contain books chosen by librarians and materials developed to support storytelling and reading with children. There are two versions of the book bag available, depending on the age of the children participating in the ELC or SAC service.

Each library has a bookbag with the same materials that can be loaned out to children and their families.

What is the aim of the Little Library Book Bag?

The Little Library Book Bag initiative supports ELC and SAC services to further develop little libraries in their settings with quality book titles in English and Irish.

The focus of this initiative is to support early language and literacy development among children and build strong links between ELC and SAC services and libraries.

ELC and SAC services and libraries are key resources in the community for children and families and this project supports them to work together to support young children’s learning.

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY), the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCD) and the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA).
